Birds
The Centrale Ornithologique
Surveying and protecting the bird populations of Luxembourg has been the LNVL's long-standing major concern: natur&emwelt aims to continue and extend this work. Bound by contract to the Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Centrale Ornithologique runs the field ornithology and bird ringing groups and co-ordinates the various national monitoring programmes, such as the Common Bird Monitoring, the Rare Breeding Birds Survey, the annual Waterbird Census, or area-specific research.
Field
Ornithology and Bird Ringing Groups
The backbone of these two research groups is formed by the volunteer members that take part in the specific ornithological activities and bird ringing schemes. The members of the field ornithology group monitor the populations of rare species (such as Black Stork, Peregrine Falcon, Eagle Owl, or Corncrake) at an annual rate, or of other breeding species that are relevant to conservation issues at irregular, but well-defined intervals.
Every year, 25,000 birds are ringed in Luxembourg, in close association with the Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, which provides the rings.
The results of all this scientific work are published in the Regulus -- Wissenschaftliche Berichte.
Red List of Threatened Birds
